Curriculum
Primary SchoolThe Primary Curriculum
The Department of Education and Training sets the learning requirements for each stage of primary school. The four stages are: Early Stage 1 (Foundation), Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2), Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) and Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6).
In English and Mathematics, your child will learn specific topics each year. In these two subjects there are certain ‘building blocks’ that must be learned before your child moves to the next level of understanding. The other subjects are more flexible and topics can be taught at any point within the two-year stage.

2. Express ideas and communicate with others, using ICT
3. Develop an awareness of the range of applications of ICT in society
4. Develop the confidence to explore, adapt and shape technological understandings now and in the future.
English
Concepts:
In English students develop knowledge, skills and understanding about English language and literature and the ability to talk, listen, read, view, and write with purpose, effect and confidence. They develop knowledge of the ways in which language varies according to context and a sound grasp of the language structures, spelling and grammar. The three broad strands of English are:
1. Talking and Listening
2. Reading
3. Writing.
Literacy is integrated across the KLAs using a whole school language approach. Teaching strategies encompass modelled, guided and independent meaningful learning experiences. Students are engaged in essential literacy skills including Spelling Mastery, shared reading, guided reading, novel study, grammar and punctuation, comprehension, literary and factual text types and handwriting. A ‘Classroom Library’ has been developed with a broad range of literature to encourage students to read for pleasure.
HSIE

4. Social Systems and Structures

Islamic Studies & Arabic
Concepts:
At Glenroy Private we know as a fact that the way to knowing the obligations and prohibitions is by acquiring the religious knowledge. Hence, the guardian of the children must teach them the belief that Allah is clear of having any similarity to the creations, as well as teaching them the obligatory and forbidden matters, such as the essential parts of taharah (purification) and salah (prayer).
At the present time, raising children is not an easy matter, especially considering that most schools do not place such education as their top priority. There is no doubt that such education improves the welfare of the children and results in their wellbeing in this life and the life after.
As a result, Glenroy Private embarked on teaching “The Islamic Education Series” to our students.
Each of the five (5) books in this Series consists of three (3) chapters that deal with: Belief, Acts of Worship, and Islamic Manners. In addition to this Series, Qur’anic Recitation (Tajwid) and Prophetic Biography (As-Siratun-Nabawiyyah) are taught at our school as well.
God willing, this knowledge will help them contribute to building communities based on sound values and will make them safe in the Hereafter.
In addition to teaching Religion and Qur’an, Glenroy Private is keen to teach the Arabic Language to all of its students for it is the language of the Qur’an and the language of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Arabic language has consistent, predictable rules of grammar, pronunciation and spelling, making it actually quite an easy language to learn.
Our curriculum is designed for students beginning the formal study of Arabic in primary school; however, it also provides the opportunity for those who already have some knowledge of the Arabic language to develop and extend their Arabic skills and to learn more about their own or another culture.
We realise that the widespread community of Arabic speakers generates a natural demand for the maintenance of the Arabic language.
Mathematics
Concepts:
Mathematics involves the development of students’ thinking, understanding, competence and confidence in the application of mathematics.
1. Working Mathematically
2. Number
3. Patterns and Algebra
4. Measurement and Data
5. Space and Geometry
Mathematics incorporates the processes of questioning, reflecting, reasoning and proof. It is a powerful tool for problem solving. Students’ numeracy and underlying mathematical understanding will be enhanced through engagement with a variety of applications of mathematics to real-world situations and problems in other key learning areas.
Mathematics is based on student centred activities which consists of hands-on resources, group work, mental computation, higher order thinking skills, reflecting on learning, questioning students’ understanding, and assessment for learning.
PDHPE
Concepts:
To develop students’ capacity to enhance personal health and wellbeing, enjoy an active lifestyle, maximise movement potential and advocate lifelong health and physical activity.
