The Primary Curriculum

At Glenroy Private, we are committed to giving every child the strongest possible start in their learning. Over the past few years, we have introduced a range of evidence-based programs and teaching approaches designed to lift student achievement, strengthen early literacy, and ensure consistent, high-quality teaching across every classroom.

These improvements are grounded in the belief that every child can succeed with the right instruction, support, and opportunities to practise their skills. We are proud to share the work we are doing to create a seamless, structured learning journey for all students.

Explicit teaching across all key learning areas

Glenroy Private continues to strengthen all Key Learning Subject Areas through a whole-school commitment to explicit, structured, and evidence-based teaching. Explicit Teaching is the cornerstone of our curriculum instruction at our school. This highly effective, research-aligned pedagogy ensures that all students are provided with clear, systematic instruction and meaningful learning experiences.

Each lesson follows the I do, We do, You do model:

I do – Teacher Modelling

Teachers explicitly model the skill or concept being taught, using clear demonstrations, worked examples, and step-by-step explanations. Students see exactly what successful learning looks like.

We do – Guided Practice

Students practise alongside the teacher, receiving immediate, targeted feedback and support. This stage ensures early success, corrects misconceptions, and builds confidence.

You do – Independent Practice

Students apply their learning independently to consolidate understanding and demonstrate mastery of concepts.

Immediate Feedback & Mastery

Across all stages of the lesson, students receive timely, specific, and actionable feedback. This helps them correct misunderstandings quickly and reinforces the skills required to achieve mastery.

This structured instructional sequence ensures that all learners are set up for success and provides the clarity and predictability needed for strong learning outcomes.

Why this approach works:

Research consistently shows that explicit, structured teaching leads to higher learning outcomes, particularly for students who benefit from clear, direct instruction.
Parents can feel confident that every classroom follows a consistent, high-quality approach that supports all learners.

Explicit Teaching provides clarity and consistency by ensuring every lesson includes:

  • A clear purpose
  • Step-by-step modelling
  • Guided practice with teacher support
  • Opportunities for independent practice
  • Regular check-ins for understanding
  • Immediate, constructive feedback

Decodable Readers in F-2: Building Confidence Through Success

We have also introduced decodable readers in Foundation to Year 2 to complement InitiaLit. These books are specially designed to match the sounds and patterns students are learning in class.

Why decodable readers matter

  • Children apply the phonics they’ve been explicitly taught, reinforcing skills through real reading.
  • They experience early success, which is essential for building confidence and avoiding reading frustration.
  • These readers help prevent guessing habits by encouraging decoding—one of the strongest predictors of future reading success.

Decodable readers ensure every early reading experience is purposeful, supportive, and aligned with your child’s learning.

MacqLit (Year 3 - 6): Strengthening Literacy Across the Upper Primary Years

Our literacy support pathway is enhanced through MacqLit, a structured intervention program designed for Year 3–6 students who require ongoing support in reading.

How MacqLit supports upper primary learners:

  • Develops confidence in reading longer, more complex words
  • Enhances spelling, vocabulary, and overall comprehension
  • Provides systematic and explicit practice to reinforce key literacy skills
  • Helps students engage more successfully with the full curriculum

MacqLit offers a targeted and sustained approach for students who need additional time to consolidate their reading skills, ensuring steady progress and continuity well beyond the early years.

A seamless F-6 Learning Pathway

One of our key goals is to create a smooth, connected learning journey from Foundation to Year 6. Our curriculum reforms support this by ensuring:

Early Years (F–2):

    • Strong foundations through InitiaLit
    • Decodable readers to support early success
    • MiniLit Sage for targeted intervention

Middle & Upper Years (3–6):

    • Growing independence in reading and writing
    • MacqLit intervention for students who need continued support
    • Deepening comprehension and critical thinking

Across All Years:

    • Consistent Explicit Teaching practices
    • A strengthened Learning Support team
    • Regular communication and partnership with families

This approach ensures every student experiences continuity, clarity, and the support they need to thrive.

Building Strong foundations: InitaLit (Foundation – Year 2)

A strong start is essential for long-term success, which is why we have implemented InitiaLit, a research-backed literacy program grounded in the Science of Reading. This program provides a structured, clear, and systematic approach to teaching the essential building blocks of reading and writing.

What this means for your child:

  • Children learn phonics in a carefully sequenced order, making reading easier and more predictable.
  • They receive explicit spelling and handwriting instruction, helping them develop confident writing habits.
  • Oral language and vocabulary are built into every lesson to strengthen comprehension.
  • Children experience success early, which boosts their motivation and helps them feel confident as readers

Why we chose InitiaLit

Schools across Australia using InitiaLit have seen powerful improvements in reading accuracy and fluency. Its structured and consistent approach ensures all children—regardless of background or learning style—are given the foundation they need to become skilled, confident readers.
