Writing

Students are encouraged to write expressive and detailed texts about challenging ideas and information through the use of narratives, persuasion and reflection. Students are urged to experiment and reflect on their own personal responses to written, non-written and multimedia texts. Students are introduced to tools for interpreting and recording information.

English outcomes are integrated across all subject areas

• The aim of the Year 9 course is to consolidate skills acquired in earlier years and to provide more challenging texts on which oral and written work is based. More emphasis is placed on analysis and students are introduced to the more technical aspects of how texts are constructed and the elements of poetry, story and drama with a view to improving their ability to evaluate the merit of the texts studied.
• In Year 10 texts and materials are provided to form the basis of discussions and written work covering a range of cultural and societal issues. There will be analysis of texts and practice in formal skills such as spelling, grammar, and critical analysis. It is expected that students will consolidate and develop these skills during the year.

By the end of Year 10 students should be able to use English effectively to express information, ideas and feelings in writing and speaking. Students should have mastered the conventions of the English language and its different forms and use technology to help them develop and publish texts.
Students should appreciate the vital part language plays in the passing on of cultural traditions and values and for living and working in society. Ideally, they should find pleasure in expressing themselves in writing and speaking and should become discriminating and keen readers.
After completing their studies of the media, they should be well aware of the influence it has on their lives and know how to evaluate its verbal and non-verbal elements. The media units have been devised to provide a progressive study suited to the increasing maturity of the students.
